Thanks to recent measures introduced by the UK government, there has never been a better time to switch to electric.
Miles Roberts, innovation specialist, Chorley GroupOn March 1 this year, the government revised the Plug-in Car Grant structure to favour 100 per cent electric vehicles (EV) rather than Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs).
Running costs also remain as low as ever, with the LEAF typically costing just 2p per mile in electricity, and servicing bills are significantly less than petrol and diesel vehicles (due to EVs not requiring oil and filter changes). Car tax is zero and, because the taxation is based around emissions, it will remain zero for years to come.
EV technology has also evolved since the first Nissan LEAFs hit the UK’s roads in 2011. The latest version of the LEAF is available with a 30kWh battery, giving a maximum range of 155 miles. The UK’s charging infrastructure is also growing all the time, with the free-to-use Rapid Charging network now covering 98 per cent of all motorway services, meaning longer journeys have become just as easy as the daily commute to work.
