Virgin Media acquired the Morecambe-based Smallworld Cable in February 2014, obtaining their fibre optic network, which has seen 40,000 homes across Lancaster and Morecambe, as well as Carlisle, Irvine, Troon and Kilmarnock benefit from early access to Virgin Media’s broadband services.
The 152Mb top speed, which Ofcom has recently confirmed as the UK’s fastest broadband provider for the sixth year in a row, has now been launched in Lancaster, designed to help people stay safe online and get the most from the digital world.
Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media’s chief executive officer, commented: “We’re delighted to be investing Virgin Media’s advanced services to hundreds of homes, businesses and organisations in Lancaster for the very first time. The new 152Mb top speed is the fastest widely available connection in the UK, five times faster than regular broadband from Sky or BT. "With the power of Virgin Media’s network, we can ensure digital really does makes good things happen for our customers in Lancaster, the communities around us and the country. Technology can help but we want every family to feel confident, informed and able to choose what online experience is right for them.”
