School children from across Lancashire have come together to enjoy a championship curling experience thanks to The Flower Bowl Entertainment Centre in Preston.
Pupils from five primary schools took part in the venue’s first Slippers & Sliders Junior Curling Tournament in July. The aim of the event was to encourage youngsters to try a new challenge that would build their confidence both on and off the rink.
Curling is the perfect activity for team building because everyone is equal on the ice. Most people haven’t tried curling before and it’s a sport that requires skill, strategy and communication skills rather than sporting prowess.
The Flower Bowl invited each of the schools to take part in a free five-week curling course. The pupils were given expert tuition in the Olympic sport and learnt how to slide the stones across the ice just like the pros.
They then came to The Flower Bowl to take part in the one-day tournament. After morning practice, each school played an end against each team. The school with the highest number of shots was Our Lady & St Edwards from Preston.
The Flower Bowl’s Ruaraidh Whyte says: “It was a fantastic event and it was so positive to see the children’s confidence and ability grow during the five weeks. Curling is an amazing sport for helping people of all ages work together and learn new skills. I’m really proud of how well they all did. Who knows we might have inspired the next Winter Olympic champion!”
The Flower Bowl Entertainment Centre in Preston is home to the only permanent full-sized curling rink in the North of England. It offers a range of sessions from fun mini games suitable for kids, through to one-one-one expert coaching designed to take your skills to the next level.
