‘Breaking into News’ is aimed at promoting diversity and equality within broadcast journalism and celebrates the next generation of talent who are looking to start a career within journalism.
“I have cerebral palsy and use an electric wheelchair and want to encourage others who have a disability to follow their dreams and work towards their goals. Initially, I wasn’t going to enter this competition but my friends gave me the confidence to try and I’m so glad they did.”
Francesca said: “One in three young people admit to feeling lonely – this time of your life should be so carefree and enjoyable, I found this statistic really shocking. By filming the project, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and give a voice to those who don’t have one.
Francesca added: “I have been so lucky to have worked with some amazing people - my tutors at Blackburn College never gave up on me even when I was doubting myself. They helped adjust my timetable to fit in with my personal requirements and their belief in my potential really helped me to find my confidence.”
Francesca added: “I will be travelling to Leeds for the regional finals and have already had an interview with Tony and Lucy from Granada Reports. It was one of the most emotional things I have ever done – seeing all the hard work I put into the film and watching it come together was amazing. “The process has given me such a boost in confidence – my mentors and tutors have really supported me and the reaction has been incredible. I really hope that my video will help to raise awareness of youth loneliness and encourage people to share their problems.”
