The competition, now in its third year, commissions students studying the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Art and Design at Cardinal Newman College to produce a piece of art based on the theme “My Surroundings”. The students’ research and experiment with a host of different techniques, including painting, drawing, photography, embroidery and printing to produce pieces for the competition.Louise Potter. office manager, along with Laura Forrest, operations support, were invited by the college to view all the artwork produced and selected a shortlist of 15 pieces to be displayed in the Taylor Patterson Offices.
Laura commented: “This year’s artwork is the highest standard yet making it extremely difficult in choosing the shortlisted entries. It was clear to see how much hard work and effort the students had dedicated to producing their final pieces.” Once the artwork is on display, staff from Taylor Patterson were asked to vote for their favourite piece, and with 70 per cent of the overall vote, Megan Squire was declared the winner. Megan explained: “I was inspired by the traditional architecture and heritage of Preston as well as the green spaces found within the city. I focused on buildings such as The Harris Museum and The Old Law Courts because of their grand, ornate facades. My painting is based on the idea of plants taking over the urban setting.”
