Burnley-based food wholesaler Birchall Foodservice has commenced work on the installation of 388 clean energy solar panels on its main warehouse roof.
Well known for its commitment to sustainability, the founder Country Range member will save over 50 tonnes of carbon each year thanks to the solar panels, helping the company to fulfil its pledge to help protect the environment and build a greener future.
While the solar panels offer environmental benefits, they will also help the wholesaler reduce its operating costs and control future energy bills. The company is planning to invest these energy savings in a new fleet of electric vehicles and the continued development of its people, the majority of whom are from the local area.
Operations director, Nicola Watson said: “We are fully committed to reducing our carbon footprint throughout the business, and the installation of these solar panels is the next step in our journey to becoming one of the greenest foodservice providers in the country.”
The award-winning family-run wholesaler has introduced a number of sustainability initiatives over the past four years, including the formation of its ‘Plastic Action’ group who have worked to dramatically reduce the amount of plastic used within the business.
