Blackpool’s Notarianni Bros known for its signature vanilla ice cream has partnered with the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy to enhance its energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.
The Blackpool based ice cream parlour established in 1928, is managed by Luca Vettese, a fourth-generation descendant of the original founders. He already understands the importance of a sustainable business, "Operating in a carbon-friendly and environmentally friendly way is important to all of us," Vettese stated.
"We source as many local ingredients as we can, use compostable and biodegradable packaging, and all our packaging carries the Keep Blackpool Tidy logo. We recently participated in a beach clean with the Blackpool Sea Life Centre."
In addition to this, Vettese sought to further minimise the parlour’s environmental impact. This led him to Megan Tucker, a sustainability specialist, from Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy, who conducted a fully funded energy audit at the premises. The result was a personalised decarbonisation plan aimed at improving energy efficiency throughout the business.
The plan was comprised of installing daylight saving sensors for the shop front, motion sensors for the factory, and voltage optimization for both premises. Additionally, Megan provided estimates for installing solar photovoltaics, which could significantly reduce energy consumption.
The partnership with the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy allows Notarianni Bros to make improvements with the best return on investment. “It gave us a really good understanding of the business’ energy usage, where we could implement new things and what impact those changes would have,” says Luca.
