Lloyd, known to his legions of fans as “Bumble”, played for Stanley before his celebrated cricket career saw him captain Lancashire and represent England.
He will join current directors Ilyas Khan, Peter Marsden and Peter Shaw, and chief executive Robert Heys.
Lloyd told his more than 200,000 Twitter followers: “Thrilled to be a non-exec director at Accrington Stanley FC. A community needs a football club . ASFC is a little cracker!”
Club chairman Ilyas Khan said: “We highlighted in November that we would supplement the board with independent non-executive directors - in David we have added to the credibility and the professionalism of the board in the best way possible.”
The proposed appointment will now be sent for the approval of the Football League.
