At Fagan & Whalley, we’re tackling one of the most pressing challenges in our industry: the mental health crisis affecting HGV drivers.
With suicide rates among drivers 20 per cent higher than the national average, we are committed to taking proactive steps to support our workforce through industry-leading initiatives.
Dan Fagan, managing director of Fagan and Whalley, said: “The statistics surrounding HGV drivers and suicide are alarming.
“Ultimately, supporting mental health in the logistics sector is a shared responsibility. At Fagan & Whalley, we’re dedicated to being part of the solution, ensuring our drivers are not only heard but also cared for.”
The figures speak for themselves. In a profession where 98.8 per cent of drivers are men—and with men accounting for approximately 75 per cent of all UK suicides in 2022—the logistics sector faces unique challenges. Long hours, isolation, and the pressures of the job create a perfect storm for mental health struggles.
How our industry is taking action
Across logistics, we’re seeing a fundamental shift in how driver wellbeing is approached. Leading companies are now:
- Implementing mental health training programs
- Partnering with wellness organisations
- Restructuring work schedules to improve work-life balance
However, the challenge remains: how do we create meaningful change in an industry where drivers spend most of their time on the road, away from traditional support systems?
Our approach at Fagan & Whalley
In response to these challenges, we’ve developed a comprehensive support system that goes beyond standard industry practices.
We have strategically placed Certified Wellbeing Advisors at all our depots, ensuring professional support is always accessible. These advisors hold TQUK Level 2 certification in Awareness of Mental Health Problems, providing qualified assistance regardless of which depot our drivers operate from.
We’ve also partnered with award-winning mental health training provider Six Connections, introducing structured driver check-ins and comprehensive mental health awareness training for our management teams.
