In 2019 self-assessment tax software company GoSimpleTax launched a competition for one of its users to win the average tax bill to help cover their costs for the year.
London-based non-executive director and chairman, Ray Duggins won the £1,263 prize. The prize was calculated from the average tax bill of GoSimpleTax’s users in the previous tax year. Ray will use his winnings towards an indoor training bike for his office - the Wattbike Atom.
Ray has been using GoSimpleTax to submit his annual self-assessment tax return since the 2011/2012 tax year.
Commenting on his win, Ray said: “As a self-employed non-executive director, I need to manage income streams from my portfolio. I’ve always found GoSimpleTax very reassuring and as its name would suggest, ‘simple’ to use. This unexpected prize win is a real boost and I look forward to improving my fitness on the bike.”
Mike Parkes, technical director at GoSimpleTax, a self-assessment tax software, added: ”Our product exists to make users’ lives easier and take away any unnecessary stress and doubt when submitting their tax return. The idea behind the competition was to go one step further for our lucky winner and make this year’s submission an even more positive experience. Most of the stress most people feel is two-fold - leaving their return to the last minute and the financial worry around how they will pay HMRC.
“This year, that stress has the potential to be compounded due to the fallout from coronavirus as many people have seen their income levels dip and people look to defer their July tax payments on account to January 2021. It is so important that people budget for the fact this money will still be owed - as well as any payments due in January - and have a clear and up-to-date picture of their tax obligations. There’s always so much focus around meeting the January 31st deadline and the majority of people file in January itself. You can submit a tax return for 2019/2020 right now. The money won’t need to be paid any sooner but you will have a clear picture of what your owe and when.”
