Leading architecture, design and masterplanning practice FWP has successfully overseen a multi-million-pound redevelopment project at York racecourse.
FWP provided its project management, cost consultancy and principal design expertise to transform the Bustardthorpe Development to the historic racecourse, one of the sport’s most famous venues.
The completed work, carried out by principal contractor Lindum, has elevated York’s place as one of the world’s leading racecourses.
The race day experience has been enhanced with upgrades to lawns, catering offer, canopy and the full refurbishment of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand.
The new Roberto Bar Pavilion, a permanent structure replacing the previous semi-permanent bar, is now in place, along with improvements to catering and toilet facilities.
Sustainability has been at the forefront of the project. The redevelopment has incorporated solar panels, rainwater harvesting, living roofs and extensive Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) approved planting to futureproof York as a premier venue for racing enthusiasts.
Kate Shuttleworth, partner at Preston headquartered FWP, who led on the project for the practice, said: “This latest transformational plan has delivered a host of improvements for racegoers and is truly outstanding. The work was all about enhancing the racegoer experience.
“The York Race Committee has a clear vision to ensure it remains one of the world’s best racecourses and it has an impressive track record of investing in the facilities, race programme and visitor experience.
“This latest work has been completed in nine months and we’re proud to have played our part in creating something special that will be enjoyed by generations of racegoers to come.”
FWP’s relationship with York stretches back to 2015 when its team helped to deliver a £10m revamp. Its team provided technical and quantity surveying support for the renovation of the Northern End of the racecourse.
FWP, which also has offices in Manchester and London, has gained a nationally acknowledged expertise in the racecourse sector - cost and project managing developments at a host of venues, including Haydock, Doncaster, Aintree Chester, Southwell and Lingfield, as well as York.
It is also well-known for its sports stadia and healthcare design work, though its portfolio is much wider and ranges from heritage projects to leisure developments.
