The millennial generations - those born between 1981 and 2001 – are set to make up a significant proportion of the workforce come 2025.

Probably the most studied generation in history, a snapshot profile of this era uncovers a highly engaged and motivated generation, not afraid to say what they want and don’t want.

It will only be a matter of years before more and more senior and executive positions will be held by millennials.

As such, smart Lancashire businesses should be looking to harness this ‘rare breed’ talent by understanding their motivations and needs.

Putting in place the right support and benefits packages will help them to recruit and retain the best millennials, ensuring the business thrives long into the future.

So, what can you do to make your business attractive to the millennial generation? 1. Inspire and engage – millennials are ambitious and want to reach the top of their profession, but they learn from strong, likeminded leaders. Incorporating a mentoring programme into your company induction will engage them from the outset and help them to learn from your more experienced talent. 2. Show they’re valued – millennials are becoming more loyal to their employers, but only if they feel their talent is being recognised. Mentoring, again, is a great way to feedback on their progress and regular performance management and appraisals give them the opportunity to discuss their development and next steps in their career progression. 3. Be flexible –. as a generation who like to work hard and play hard, a good work/life balance is essential to millennials. These tech savvy individuals know that they don’t have to be tied to the office all day, every day in order to be good at their job, so a flexible approach to working hours can improve performance and retention. Welcoming the leaders of the future into an inspiring, supportive working environment is key to them rewarding your company with their talent and commitment.
