Preston City Council leader Peter Rankin believes ambitious plans to develop the Cuerden Strategic Site will be a major boost to the local economy.
He said: “There may be some concerns about the impact of retail provision on Preston City Centre and we will ensure through the planning process that this will be carefully considered and all the evidence thoroughly reviewed.”
“We have been consistent in saying that we need to assess the implications of any retail development once we have the details and an understanding of its potential impact.”
“The range and quality of high-street brands and quirky independents create a retail mix that you just don’t get on out-of-centre retail parks.
“The draw of the city centre will continue to grow as schemes such as the new Markets Quarter, the re-imagined Harris, the remodelled bus station and the revitalised Guild Hall come to fruition.
“With its regional draw, IKEA will bring visitors into the Preston area from across the county and beyond, directly benefitting the local economy.”
The strategic site at Cuerden is one of the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal’s major projects. The plan includes 80,000 sq m of new industrial space, comprising of a range of separate units with ancillary offices.
A mixed use development includes a 120-bedroom hotel with leisure and gym facilities, car showrooms, family pub and restaurants. Added to that up to 201 new homes are included in the plan. Overall it has the potential to create 4,500 jobs. The county council says: “This proposal would create a new regional destination where people can work, live and shop.”
