Blackpool based Singleton & Smart has completed the sixteen week refurbishment of Preston Minster.
The building, previously known as St Johns Minster, has been revamped to retain its existing congregation while enhancing its appeal to a new and younger group.
One of the key conditions of the contract was to ensure completion in time for a pre-booked civic reception, which the firm achieved.
The main features of the contract were to enhance the existing fabric of the building whilst not detracting from its appearance. A range of new floor finishes and decorations was carefully selected to be in keeping with the building with other works including the installation of new automatic doors, full commercial kitchen, formation of a new toilets, new internal lighting scheme and heritage repairs both internally and externally.
There was a large amount of purpose made manufactured joinery which Singleton & Smart manufactured in its joinery workshop. The refurbishment also included a full audio visual installation which resulted in the installation of more than four miles of cables, with custom made collars to wrap around the columns within the minster to ensure no fixings were installed to the original fabric of the building.
The contract was overseen by Singleton & Smart director Alan Mylecraine, The scheme was designed by Ivan Wilson Architects based in Clitheroe, headed up by Rebecca Gilbert-Rule and Ivan Wilson with quantity surveying undertaken by Lee O’Neill from Glovers, Accrington.
