The French company said it would shift its North West attentions to the Widnes depot, which it described as "the natural home for [our] increasingly digitally focussed business".
A company statement said: "Alstom has recently opened its new Transport Technology Centre in Widnes in the Liverpool City Region. We plan to centralise our technologies and capabilities in this new world class facility - increasing our productivity and competitiveness."
He said: "We keep hearing the hype about the so-called Northern Powerhouse so why are aerospace and train manufacturers in the north shedding jobs by the hundreds?" Consultation is ongoing with trade unions and staff.
