160 per cent surge in AI energy demand: is solar the solution?

These past few years, we’ve seen a significant shift in how data centres approach their power needs.

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is creating unprecedented energy demands, pressing businesses to seek renewable solutions.

Recent industry data caught our attention: AI operations account for 12 per cent of data centre electricity consumption. For context, that is the equivalent of powering 4.8m UK homes daily. With AI energy usage projected to surge 160 per cent in the next decade, data centres must act now to find sustainable power sources.

The urgency for this transition is evident. But time and time again, we are reminded that change is possible. UK businesses like Iomart, have successfully installed 560 solar panels at their facility.

David Gammie, their CTO, said: "We've committed to powering all our data centres with 100% renewable energy. This installation will generate our energy onsite, potentially exporting energy back into the grid network."

Transitioning to solar power presents a major opportunity for businesses to take the lead in sustainability. The installation process is straightforward, offering immediate cost savings. This is an attractive prospect for data centres looking to expand or upgrade.

At Low Carbon Energy, our commercial solar panels generate between 500 and 700 watts per panel per hour, making energy independence a realistic goal for tech businesses navigating the ever-growing energy crisis.

We're committed to helping Lancashire businesses lead the way in sustainable innovation—combining environmental responsibility with smart business strategy.
